Alex Muromcew is out of the running for county commissioner.

Three Republicans — Peter Long, Tom Segerstrom and Kasey Mateosky — will advance to the general election, where they will face Democrat incumbents Mark Newcomb and Luther Propst.

Wes Gardner is running as a write-in Democrat and needs to receive 25 valid votes to make it to the general. Write-ins won’t be confirmed until Wednesday, Teton County Clerk Maureen Murphy said.

The contested Republican primary race was close.

Muromcew came in 299 votes behind third place with a total of 2,550 votes.

In Teton County, 7,978 cast Republican ballots.

Long received 3,596 votes, Segerstrom received 3,306 votes and Mateosky received 2,849. There were 215 write-in votes.

Muromcew arrived at the commissioners’ chambers just before the final numbers came in from Alta and upon seeing the final results said he was “stunned.” He then shook hands with Tom Segerstrom and unchallenged House District 23 Republican candidate Paul Vogelheim, congratulating them on making it through.

Muromcew also lost precinct captain to Bill Scarlett, 73 to 92 votes. Muromcew is a former chair of the Teton County GOP and sitting chair of the Teton County planning commission.

Leaving the chambers, Muromcew said that he’d have to mull over the results to determine what staying involved in the Teton County GOP looks like.

“It’s interesting that they, the Republicans, chose a pro-growth and a conservationist as the top two vote getters, so go figure,” Muromcew said.

Peter Long, Tom Segerstrom, Kasey Mateosky all called the results “humbling.”

Long said he thought the results meant people were ready for a leader with a “voice for the working class.”

Mateosky also said he considered his voters the working class.

Segerstrom said he was “interested in those folks who do not support me, if I get a chance to work with them as well.”

The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
