Muromcew runs for County Commission

Alex Muromcew, current chair of the Teton County Planning Commission and former Teton County GOP chair, will run for one of three county commissioner seats up for re-election this fall.

This will be his second political campaign after running a last-minute write-in campaign in 2018 against Rep. Andy Schwartz, a Teton County Democrat, for Wyoming House District 23.

Though he lost with 37% of the vote, he said he still had a good time.

“I thought, ‘We’re a democracy. And what kind of democracy are we when you go into the polling booth and there’s only one choice?’ ” he said.

This time around the Washington, D.C., native is declaring his intent well in advance of the November election — and his campaign for commissioner is focused on shrinking spending in Teton County government.

Muromcew is the first candidate to say he wants to lower the county mill rate to zero and he opposes relocating the fairgrounds.

Though he’s not from a longtime ranching family like his now-opponent, Peter Long, Muromcew’s former career in institutional asset management, most recently at TIAA where he managed $2 billion globally, means he’s serious about money management, he said.

“For Wyoming to prosper in the 21st century we need some global ideas ... and some awareness of how communities, not only the U.S. but around the world, are wrestling with some of the issues that we’re facing,” he said.
